Introduction

Airborne Flight Reporting System™ (AFRS™) is a helpful tool for pilots, drone operators, passengers, and family, friends and business associates. The type of information provided from the AFRS™ app is dependent upon the features available in the mobile device you are using. For example, some mobile devices provide speed, altitude, heading, temperature, pressure and other parameters. An optional AFRS™ web-based portal is available that increases the features and functionality of the mobile app to include such additional features as geofencing, unlimited flight path history, charting, detailed performance alerts, and enhanced message management.

PILOTS may find AFRS™ valuable as an aide to:

• Augment Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) information by providing flight information between ground and Altitude Above Ground Level (AGL) upwards to 4,000 feet;

• Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) during terminal airspace procedures for controlled and uncontrolled airports. Provides flight path information regarding speed, altitude and heading useful in analyzing wind correction angles, glide slope, and energy management;

• Automatically send flight plan updates to ground personnel when passing various waypoints or flight events;

• Airport information such as NAVAIDS, frequencies and runway information.

GROUND PERSONNEL can receive in-flight updates on location and performance via automated notifications by email, text, and telephone messages if authorized by the pilot. This let’s family, friends, and business associates aware of pending flight delays for airline and private pilot flights. AFRS™ can also provide “Safe Flight” information to provide peace of mind to vested parties.

Mobile Application Features

The following AFRS™ program features are available in the mobile application

Cockpit

Includes the home screen, personal configuration, and an informational section.

Emergency

This screen will launch an emergency message which is preconfigured in Unified Messaging and set as the Emergency alert default.

United Messaging

Create, select, and review historical messages configured and sent from AFRS™. When creating a message, it requires selection of one or more individual contacts either from the mobile device address book or separately entered in the Contact Manager of the app. Options available for sending messages include email, SMS text, Text-to-Voice translation, and recorded Voice Message. An option to include Variables is provided which will insert time, event, or device dependent information. For example, it is possible to insert the actual date and time when a message is sent, insert the actual geo-location of the mobile device, and include the IMEI of the mobile device which can help law enforcement officials identify phone owners and other information in the event of an emergency.

• TTV and Voice Message options enables messages to be delivered to land line telephones via voice communication. For TTV, simply type in the text you want to be machine translated to voice and sent to a land line or mobile phone. Variables can be used with TTV as they too are translated to voice.

• Voice Messages can only be selected via the drop-down list within the Unified Message menu. To create and manage voice messages, visit the Voice Manager menu.

Flight Manager

• Flight Path

You can chart the flight path as overlaid on a street or satellite map for a preselected time period. The history is not saved past a seven-day period in the mobile app. The optional portal license stores unlimited history data.

• Waypoint

This submenu permits geo-location and time stamping an area of interest. Waypoints offer a quick method identifying a place that you want to recall at a later time. You can take pictures, get the nearest street address, and create a unique name. Use the Waypoint feature when you want to save important information about a particular landmark or flight incident.

• TripTrax

This allows the user to plan a trip lasting in duration intervals of 30 minutes, or 1, 2, 4, 8, or 24 hours. The reporting period can be chosen, with report times ranging between 10 seconds and 5 minutes. The user can then start their trip by pressing the "Start Trip" button. This button will prompt a popup which asks for the name and description of this trip. After this is entered, the Start Trip button can no longer be pressed, until the trip is ended with the "End Trip" button. When the trip is ended, a popup appears saying "Trip completed success". The user can then hit the "review" button at the bottom of the page to view their past trips. This brings up a GPS map and a drop-down menu that lets the user select what trip they want to view. When a trip is selected, the start point, end point and route taken appears. If the start point or end point is tapped, it shows the date and time each point was. There is also an arrow on each that if tapped, a popup appears stating the address, zip code and town of it.

Performance

Report on the vehicle performance yielding time history of Altitude and Speed. The Flight Gauges option provides trip information for a selected time period to include maximum airspeed, average airspeed, distance traveled, average altitude, and maximum altitude.

Flight Plans

Use this feature to get travel distance and estimated time between airports. AFRS™ has collected information on over 50,000 airports around the world. Type in the airport name, and the type-ahead search will present options from our database. You will be presented with travel distance, great-circle flight route, and information about your take-off and destination airports. Plug-in your estimated “block time” which is defined as the total amount of time a flight takes between two airports starting with leaving the departure gate (“off-blocks”) to arriving at the destination gate (“on-blocks”). For airlines, an — is called “block time”, and airline block times vary for the same routes. An average block-time for normal airline operations is 384 knots (nautical miles per hour). A nautical mile is 6076 feet (1,852m) vs statue (normal) mile of 5,280 feet (1,609m).

Account

Look here to access two menus: 1) Buy Credits, and 2) Online Help. Your Airborne FRS mobile app is pre-loaded with Available Message Credits (AMC) which enable you to send outgoing messages by email, SMS text, and voice telephone. There are enough credits for you to send sample messages or to save enough AMC’s to send an Emergency Alert. The app uses AMCs for each message type and for each person you are sending messages to. We suggest you maintain a balance of Typical uses of However, we are sure you will find value in the app for use as an on-demand and emergency message system. We wish we could give you free messaging all the time, but we charge nominal fees so we can keep a very robust communication network ready at all times!

Contact Manager

Two features are provided that offer personal privacy regarding information about people you call, email, or text. The Local Contacts feature lets you create individual contacts which are not stored in your mobile device’s database or in the cloud. These contact records are also not synced to your cellular phone’s provider back-up system such as iCloud, Google Cloud, Verizon Back-up, and the like. You can create Local Contacts to be used as your own personal address book which is independent of the mobile device you are on. You can also use Local Contacts to send Unified Messages and Emergency Alerts. When you delete a Local Contact, it permanently removed and not stored in any other electronic device. To add contacts, tap the three stacked circles in the upper right corner of your screen.

The Sync feature backs-up your contact address book to the Airborne FRS cloud for safe storage. You may choose this option in conjunction with, or as an alternative, to storing your mobile device address book in the public cloud or your cellular provider’s cloud.
